Depression of Monocyte Inflammatory Response with Pregnancy, Cancer, Regeneration and Surgical Wound Repair
Macrophage accumulation at inflammatory sites is depressed by tumor bearing (1,2) and this phenomenon may constitute a mechanism by which tumors abrogate host surveillance (3,4). However, is this anti-inflammatory effect unique to cancer? Could the tumor utilize an already established mechanism for regulating monocyte traffic and function? We speculate that the diversity of macrophage functions necessitates some form of biological control mechanism to prevent untoward reactions. The purpose of this communication is to explore this issue by examining anti-inflammation consequent to several noncancerous conditions as well as during growth of both spontaneous and transplanted tumors.
