It is well established that monocytes/macrophages provide helper signals necessary for the induction of proliferation of T-lymphocytes by mitogens (1). This helper function consists in the elaboration of a growth factor known as Interleukin 1 (IL-1). IL-1 does not support the proliferative response of T-lymphocytes directly but acts as a signal which helper T-cells require for the production of a further growth factor, Interleukin 2 (IL-2). The subsequent interaction of IL-2 with specific receptors on mitogen-activated T-lymphocytes generally initiates cell proliferation (2).
