Abstract

Monocyte production in mice is stimulated during the initial phase of acute inflammation by a humoral factor called the factor increasing monocytopoiesis (FIM) (1). This factor, a protein of about 20,000 daltons without detectable carbohydrates at its active site, induces monocytosis by stimulating proliferation of promonocytes in the bone marrow (2). The number of granulocytes and lymphocytes is not affected.
