The Impact of Immunology on Medicine

If Elie Metchnikoff, who must be regarded as the ancestral father of Reticuloendothelial Societies and Congresses, were to return to life and preside over this IX Congress he would be pleased and astonished at the size of the audience and the number and range of topics for discussion. He would probably also be surprised that the discussions were to be in English rather than in French and German as well as at the general atmosphere of amity which pervades — for he himself was accustomed to and, I suspect, enjoyed polemical arguments with those opponents who did not accept the essential Tightness of his view that microphages and above all macrophages provided the one true mechanism of immunity.
