Syntheses of Nitrogenous Materials by RF Plasmas
Radiofrequency (rf) plasmas of argon, nitrogen or air have been used to make cotton more absorbent of either oil or water1. Free radical sites created on the substrate by the plasma picked up oxygen from moisture or air to chemiluminesce and the electron spin resonance (ESR) signal intensity was inversely related to the chemiluminescence (CL). The free radicals could initiate polymerization some time after plasma irradiation was stopped.2 Irradiation of cotton with any of the aforementioned plasmas resulted in addition of nitrogen to the cotton. The nitrogen was readily detected by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), but was not detected by multiple internal reflectance spectroscopy (MIR). Except for hydrogen produced by plasma effects on cotton or derived from water adsorbed on the walls of the reactor, there was none in those plasma systems.
