Abstract
Heat fluxes near the surface of steel are calculated as a function of laser parameters such as power, density distribution and absorbed power. Additionally, experiments are carried out to improve the melting and alloying of defined areas in steel and to conpare the experimental results with the calculated ones. It is shown that hardened zones and fusion lines in laser treated steel can be calculated whereas the geometry of alloyed areas cannot be fully derived from heat equations.
