The Effect of Long Term Storage on Cobalt used for Cemented Carbide Production

Abstract

Five samples of African Metals extra-fine cobalt powder produced between 1964 and 1931 were tested to determine if an effective shelf life existed for their direct use in cemented carbide production. The powders were tested for morphology, phases present, oxygen content and as binders in a WC-Co piece by Teledyne Firth Sterling. The tests showed that prior to 1974 the powders were probably produced differently than the newer powders. However, this did not effect shelf life which could be at least 15 years.
