On the Application of Light-Gas Guns to the Problem of Nuclear Fusion Refueling
The refueling of nuclear-fusion reactors will require the injection of solid hydrogen pellets at very high speeds. In present-day experiments single-stage light-gas guns are employed to inject 1-mm pellets at velocities up to 1000 m/s. In order to meet the future requirements, more sophisticated machines are required; one possible candidate is the two-stage light-gas gun. In the present work the main features and the basic theory of light-gas guns are presented. A simple analysis shows that the possible performance of these machines is well within the requirements of nuclear-fusion refueling.
