Within the past decade there have been several studies conducted on homophobia (originally termed “homoerotic phobia”) or the irrational fear or intolerance of homosexuality.20 One study reported that the best predictor of homophobia in men was a firm belief in the traditional family ideology with father as head of the household and mother submissive to his authority. A belief in a conservative religious philosophy was also indicative of the person who held negative attitudes toward homosexuality.21 Other studies have concurred that those individuals who were the most negative in their attitudes concerning homosexuality were likely to be from rural backgrounds, to be Caucasian, and to be male.22 These studies, however, differed on reporting whether chronological age and level of education were significant indicators. Where differences have been noted, the homophobic person is reported to have been generally older and less educated.
