Several years ago the discovery and understanding of the functions of neurotransmitters and their control of metabolic and behavioral aspects was one of the greatest achievements of neuroscientists. However, the recent discovery of neuropeptides has excited neuroscientists so much that it is hailed as the single most important breakthrough in our understanding of brain function. However, knowledge in this area is developing so rapidly that what is today an accepted concept may undergo a rapid change or modification in just a few years.
