Laboratory Beam-Plasma Interactions — Linear and Nonlinear

Though the laboratory studies of beam-plasma interactions which we will discuss have been made within the last decade or so, the literature on this subject extends back many decades and includes early work by the progenitor of plasma physics, Langmuir (see Crawford and Kino (1961) for an historical survey). We will avoid the Herculean task of reviewing a field which has produced many hundreds of papers, and our selection of material has a high degree of arbitrariness — we therefore give advanced apologies for our many sins of omission. The reader will, however, find a number of helpful partial reviews of this field. The linear aspects are discussed by Briggs (1964), Seidel (1969), Mikhailovskii (1975), Akhiezer et al (1975), Allen and Phelps (1977), while various aspects of nonlinear phenomena are discussed by Davidson (1972), Akhiezer et al., (1975), Franklin (1977), Thornhill and ter Haar (1978), ter Haar and Tystovich (1980), Rudakov and Tsytovich (1978) and Sagdeev (1979).
