Interaction of Calcium with Other Putative Mediators
Our survey of the secretory systems established that cyclic AMP exerts an influence on a number of secretory systems, although no unitary theory can be promulgated regarding the role of cyclic AMP. In some systems cyclic AMP augments secretory activity. This positive modulatory role of cyclic AMP is nowhere more apparent than in the rat parotid gland where secretion evoked by p-adrenergic receptor activation proceeds through a cyclic-AMP-mediated mechanism (Butcher and Putney, 1980). In fact, in this system the role of cyclic AMP in β-adreno-receptor-mediated amylase release has been more clearly established than the role for calcium.
