Studies on Segmental Transport in Models of Acute Renal Failure
The syndrome of acute renal failure (ARF) has been the subject of intensive investigation for many years (Stein et al., 1978). Much of our understanding of this syndrome is based on animal models using a host of modalities to precipitate the renal failure and an equally impressive list of maneuvers to ameliorate or protect agar (***) ARF. Renal artery clamping for 60 min is a model we have (***) to examine the pathophysiology of this syndrome at the level of the individual nephron segment. The effect of ischemia on segmental nephron function was assessed by the method of isolated tubule microperfusion. The response of nephron segments to ischemic injury provides a rational explanation for the genesis of the syndrome and the laboratory values encountered.
