Reprocessing Technology in Europe
This paper will cover the outline, general philosophy, and status of European technology for the reprocessing of irradiated uranium oxide fuel elements discharged from light water reactors and AGR-type reactors. It will deal with receipt and storage of fuel, shearing and dissolution, the recovery of uranium and plutonium, the purification and concentration of uranium and plutonium before transferring them to conversion plants for the manufacture of oxides, and the pretreatment of the solid liquid gaseous waste arisings. The possible impact on reprocessing technology of the recent International Nuclear Fuel Cycle Evaluation (INFCE) will also be considered.
