Nuclear Fusion Research: Status and Prospects

Abstract
It is appropriate, on this 20th anniversary of the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Tokyo, to review progress in nuclear science and technology over the last 20 years and to consider what developments are likely in the next two decades. The purpose of the present paper is to address this question in the field of nuclear fusion research, placing emphasis on studies in laboratories outside Japan. Japanese work will be discussed in the accompanying paper by T. Uchida.1)
