Intimacy among Friends and Lovers

  • James M. McMahon

The essays in this volume concern themselves with an aspect of human relationships that is on the one hand fascinating to us all and at the same time quite elusive and mysterious. Intimacy is one of those notions that we live with every day and yet are hard pressed to define, even as social scientists. Everyone you might ask “knows” what intimacy is. Yet what is clear in a common-sense way can seem downright confounding when an attempt is made to be more precise and to get a deeper or fuller understanding of what the concept means with respect to a particular relationship or to the personalities of a couple involved with each other in an intimate way.
