The study of the kinetics of surface reactions has advanced rapidly in recent years. This has been due in part to the expanding interest in these reactions, both from the point of view of practical catalytic processes and from the point of view of modification of surface properties and structure. The other major impetus to the study of these reactions has been the increasing availability of techniques which permit study of reaction kinetics at the molecular level on small areas of well characterized surfaces.
