Abstract

The application of behavior modification principles in community settings has received considerable attention. Tharp and Wetzel (1969) reported several studies that provide documentation of the application of behavior modification outside of hospital settings. Studies by authors such as Boardman (1962), Williams (1959), Lovibond (1963), and Schwitzgebel (1964) represent a few of the successful applications of behavior modification principles with running away, lying and aggressive behaviors, bedtime problem behaviors, enuresis, and juvenile delinquency respectively. More recently, behavior modification principles have been applied in the treatment of neurotic behaviors, psychotic behaviors, mental retardation, and substance abuse problems (Fazio, 1972; Kondas & Scetnicka, 1972; Liberman, Teigen, Patterson, & Baker, 1973; Mahoney & Craighead, 1973; Sobell & Sobell, 1973). Also, behavior modification principles have been applied extensively in educational settings (Allen, Chinsky, Larcen, Lochman & Selinger, 1976; Allyon, Layman & Kandel, 1975; Birnbrauer, 1976; Jones & Kazdin, 1975).
