Malnutrition and Infection
The ability of individuals to achieve their full potential depends upon an optimal interaction of genes and environment. Adverse factors that can retard such an achievement in underprivileged populations are legion. These are interlinked (Fig. 1). The prominent factors include poverty, malnutrition, infection, illiteracy, poor sanitation, sociocultural handicaps, and large sibships competing for limited resources. Malnutrition itself has a complex etiology. Food availability and nutrient intake are important determinants. However, many other factors play a significant role, including environmental contamination, absorption, and infectious disease. Changes in nutritional status can alter susceptibility to disease, manifestations of pathological states, and final outcome in terms of work capacity, morbidity, and survival.
