Supplementary nutrition is an important approach for prevention and treatment of malnutrition among children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. It is being implemented in India through a number of government and nonofficial programs. We are aware of the limitations and shortcomings of this approach, yet for health and nutrition, educational and social welfare, economic and political reasons, supplementary nutrition programs in India have continued to increase the coverage of the target population during the last two decades.
