The Structure of Mitochondrial Ubiquinol: Cytochrome c Reductase

Abstract

Cytochrome reductase (ubiquinol: cytochrome c reductase, EC 1.10.2.2) is a major enzyme of the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation system (Rieske, 1976; Crane, 1977; Hatefi and Galante, 1978; von Jagow and Sebald, 1980). The enzyme catalyzes electron transfer from ubiquinone to cytochrome c and utilizes the energy of the redox reaction to translocate protons across the mitochondrial inner membrane (Mitchell, 1975; Papa, 1976). The transmembranous proton gradient can be used by the ATP synthetase to drive the synthesis of ATP from ADP and phosphate (Boyer et al., 1977).
