Energy-Transducing Coupling Factor F0F1 from Mycobacterium phlei

Abstract

An understanding of the molecular mechanism(s) of the energy transduction for the synthesis of ATP and active transport of solute requires a basic knowledge of the component parts necessary to carry out these functions and is, thus, automatically concerned with the little-understood area where chemical function is intimately involved with physical structure at the molecular level of membrane organization. Methods used to study biochemical processes depend on the resolution of the process into component parts. Solubilized coupling factors were first resolved from Mycobacterium phlei and described as protein component(s) necessary for the restoration of phosphorylation (Brodie and Gray, 1956; Brodie, 1959); however, the latent ATPase associated with the coupling factor was not recognized.
