Abstract

In contemporary thought, the electrochemical gradient of H+ in mitochondria, the so-called protonmotive force (\({{\mu }_{{{\text{H}}^{+}}}}\)), is considered directly responsible for the transport of ions and the phosphorylation of ADP.
