Lateral Diffusion of Membrane Proteins

Abstract

Lateral diffusion of membrane proteins has been determined for many proteins (for reviews see Edidin, 1974; Cherry, 1979; Edidin, 1981), both of the plasma membrane and of internal membranes. The initial demonstration of diffusion, by following intermixing of surface antigens in newly formed heterokaryons, was essentially qualitative (Frye and Edidin, 1970). Solution of the diffusion equation for interdiffusion of components on two hemispheres (Huang, 1973) allowed quantitative estimations on cultured fibroblasts (Edidin and Wei, 1977a) and on labeled proteins of erythrocytes (Fowler and Branton, 1977).
