Abstract

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by vigorous pursuit of a thin body size and an exaggerated fear of weight gain despite emaciation. While once considered a rare disorder, recent studies have confirmed clinical impressions that anorexia nervosa has become a relatively common problem of adolescence. The prevalence in adolescent girls has been estimated to be about 0.5–1% (Crisp, 1977). While rare in males, it does occur.
