The Relevance of Spatial Variation in the Electromagnetic Vector Potential for Surface Raman Scattering

Abstract

The influence of the non-local optical properties of metal surfaces on the Raman scattering cross-section is discussed. The importance of considering the quadrupole term in the induced dipole moment is demonstrated. A new enhancement mechanism, based on the influence of the charge fluctuation in the chemisorption bond on the local phonon field, is proposed.
