Surface Modes of a Spherical Void at the Proximity of a Surface

The surface modes of a spherical void situated inside a semiinfinite dielectric are computed in the long-wavelength approximation.

Numerical eigenvalues for the dielectric constant ∈ℓm are given as function of R/D where D is the distance between the void of radius R and the surface, for a large number of values of the quantum number m.

The eigenfrequencies in the I.R. band are also computed for a typical ionic crystal using the known ∈ (ω) for LiF.
