Abstract

The question asked is why more cannot be done, why more is not done, to encourage a sense of citizen obligation in the United States, to accompany and balance the strong urge evidenced by all elements of the populace to demand their rights. Why cannot we Americans be more considerate of the rights of others and more willing to sacrifice for the good of the country, instead of concentrating, as we do, on the self-interested pursuit of personal and group advantage? This is the question posed to me. In responding, I propose to begin at the beginning.
