Water Vapour Handling in the Airways
The preservation within the lungs of their appropriate milieu interieur requires that ambient air be cleansed of particulate and noxious gaseous matter and that clean air be delivered to the alveoli warmed to body temperature and fully saturated with water vapour. This process must continue under the most adverse of ambient conditions, ranging between air at −45°C and almost devoid of water vapour as in polar regions, to air which is inspired above body temperature as in the world’s deserts.
