Thermal Shock Testing of a Hot-Pressed Si3N4 Turbine Rotor

Abstract

For a number of years, within the context of the German Ceramics Program, Daimler-Benz has been developing an all ceramic turbine rotor. This is an important activity since it is one of the few efforts to develop an integral all ceramic rotor concept. The monolithic hot pressed silicon nitride rotor is meticulously machined from single billets and subjected to a series of proof tests, which have been described in previous Army Materials Technology conferences on high temperature structural ceramics.
