Part of the Army Materials Technology Conference Series book series (volume 1)

The purposes of this talk are rather straightforward. The first objective is to reiterate and re-emphasize the theme of this Conference: namely, reliability issues in structural ceramics. Hopefully, this will further encourage our speakers to directly focus their attention and particular expertise on the various aspects of ceramic structural integrity. A second objective is to briefly review accomplishments in the field, and finally, to outline research needs in the technology. Hopefully, this will serve to stimulate more productive discussions during this Conference.
