Historical Summary of Target Technology and the International Nuclear Target Development Society
The incentive to organize the International Nuclear Target Development Society came as a natural consequence of many persons’ activities associated with nuclear physics over a span of more than 40 years. With the advent of subatomic particle accelerators it was a necessity to establish a preparation function to obtain “targets” into which charged and neutral particles, γ-rays and x-rays, neutrons, and ions could be directed for the purpose of studying “particle”-nucleon interactions. Targets therefore are simply prescribed physical arrays of nuclei (usually of an isotope) designed to permit detection and measurement of specific interactive events at known energies.
