Abstract

The I region of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) contains genes which determine or regulate the ability of an animal to respond immunologically to an antigenic challenge (McDevitt and Benacerraf, 1969; Benacerraf and Mc Devitt, 1972). Owing to the potential significance of the genetic control of the immune response by these Ir genes, an intensive effort has been made to identify the gene products encoded for by the I region and to characterize the mechanism by which Ir-gene products influence or mediate immune responsiveness. In the course of these studies, it was demonstrated that lymphocytes express a cell surface molecule which bears antigenic determinants encoded for by genes in the I region (David et al., 1973; Gotze et al., 1973; Haupfeld et al., 1973; Sachs and Cone, l973;Hämmerling et al., 1974), and these molecules have now been termed I-region-associated, or Ia, antigens.
