Electron Relaxation in Eu3-xGdxS4 by Mössbauer Spectroscopy

Abstract

A Mössbauer study between 80 and 470 K of solid solutions of Eu3-xGdxS4 with x = 0; 0,3; 0,7; 1,0; 1,7; 2 and Th3P4 structure has been undertaken. As previously reported by Berkooz et al. 1 in the case of Eu3S4, the Mössbauer spectra provide strong evidence for thermally activated electronic relaxation. The low temperature spectra for the compositions with x > 2 show two well resolved absorption peaks with isomer shifts IS of -11,5 and +0,5 mm/s characteristic for the Eu2+, respectively Eu3+ valency states with nearly the expected intensity ratio.
