Remote Sensing of Oceanic Phytoplankton: Present Capabilities and Future Goals

Abstract

Advances in the development and refinement of remote sensor technology and data management have been dramatic over the past decade. In many areas of biological oceanography, and phytoplankton ecology in particular, a variety of applicable sensors of proven sensitivity are now available which can make significant contributions to our understanding of the patterns of abundance and distribution over a variety of spatial and temporal scales. However, further refinement is needed before optimal application of these techniques to particular problems is possible. Major emphasis has been on sensor development and on increasing the sensitivity and reliability of individual sensor configurations. In some important cases, integration of these sensors into operational systems providing usable data for oceanographic phytoplankton ecologists is several years away.
