Early Organizational Effects of Hormones

An Evolutionary Perspective

  • Chapter
Neuroendocrinology of Reproduction

Abstract

Sex differentiation offers one of the most striking examples of the realization of genetic differences by epigenetic means. “Indeed, especially in . . . [coldblooded vertebrates] the environment assumes a greater part in fashioning the end-product than in almost any other genetically controlled process” (Dodd, 1960). In particular, behavioral sex differentiation provides a dramatic example of a permanent effect of sex steroids on brain function. There is also the possibility, already achieved in some species, of experimentally producing complete sex reversal.
