Perinatal Hormones and Their Role in the Development of Sexually Dimorphic Behaviors

In the previous chapter, we saw that steroid hormones have long been known to play an important role in the morphological differentiation of genital tissues. It is only more recently that the idea of an influence of steroids on the differentiation of neural substrates for sexual behavior has been brought forward and systematically examined. The purpose of this chapter is to survey the evidence on which the notion of behavioral differentiation is based. But first, let us ask why the idea that perinatal steroids affect the differentiation of neural tissues regulating adult behavior has been so slow to take root. Three major conceptual confusions can be cited as obstacles.
