Survey of High-Level Radioactive Waste Forms and Their Role in Waste Management

Abstract

Long lived fission products and actinide elements are generated in nuclear fuel while it supports operation of a reactor. Whatever concept of the fuel cycle is chosen, these radionuclides or a substantial fraction thereof will eventually form some kind of high level radioactive waste to be isolated from man for an extended period of time. This paper will present a European view mainly of one aspect of this isolation, namely the waste form.
