This chapter will consider mechanisms for the initiation of action potentials in sensory receptors, and will emphasize their significance in the transmission of information to the central nervous system. In keeping with the theme of the book, the properties of muscle receptors will be stressed, but general methods will also be described for analyzing sensory receptors. The treatment of muscle receptors can be considered as an example of how many other types of sensory receptors can be studied quantitatively.
