Membranes are ubiquitous components of cells. Not only are they found surrounding cells and separating one cell from another, but they are also present within cells. They surround organelles such as mitochondria, which provide energy for the many functions that cells undertake, and they surround the cell nucleus, which gives overall direction to the activities of cells. Membranes are also found as endoplasmic reticulum, a system of tubules which forms a meshwork upon which protein synthesis can take place throughout the cell. Understanding the relationship between the structures and the functions of biological membranes has been a long and difficult task. This continuing struggle to analyze the basic properties of membranes illustrates the problems which have been encountered in many areas of biophysics. In briefly reviewing this area, material will be emphasized which is important for understanding the developments in later chapters.
