Abstract
The creation of a regressive transference in classical psychoanalytic treatment of individuals can be regarded as a form of paradoxical intervention. The paradox is that the regressive instability generates stability. As the patient’s associations become more “free,” he goes into increasing psychological disequilibrium which then appears to produce, homeostatically, a reduced disequilibrium.
