Distribution of Damkohler Number of Spherical Matrix Particles by Image Analysis

Abstract

Reaction-diffusion kinetics in spheres (1,2,3) are governed by the Kamkohler number σ, describing the influence of the relative enzyme concentration E/Km and of the particle radius relative to the diffusion constant of the substrate R2DS. Thus σ is proportional to σ ≃ (E/Km) (R2DS). In a reactor σ is averaged and assumed to be constant. However in a granular matrix σ should be distributed like R2, provided the enzyme is homogeneously bound.
