Various abnormalities of the erythrocyte membrance structure and properties have been reported in patients with muscular dystrophy diseases as well as in animal models of these diseases, such as chickens and mice. These biophysical and biochemical abnormalities of the erythrocyte membrane include morphologic changes,12 altered lipid composition3, enzyme activities4, 5, transport properties6, deformability7–9, etc. However, there is no consensus regarding these findings7, 9 while the relationship between the biochemical and biophysical alterations of these erythrocyte membranes is unknown.
