Abstract

During harvesting and transportation, fruits and vegetables are generally subjected to mechanical forces that may bring about damage in the form of bruises and browing. In order to design fruit handling and harvest systems that do not produce any damage in fruits, a knowledge of a threshold value of loading, a fruit may sustain before bruises or browing is very much needed. The threshold value of load for a given fruit can be evaluated if a valid criterion for the tissue failure of the fruit under all possible types of loading that may occur in practice is available.
