Rheological Properties of Treated Sub-Bentonite

Abstract

The possibilities of the application of atreated sub-bentonite in drilling were emphasized; its yield was improved by alkali-activation. The alkali-activated sub-bentonite clay could resist the action of salt water especially when being activated at an elevated temperature of 100°C and one atmospheric pressure; i.e., using steam under normal pressure. This activated form resisted the effect of high temperature and pressure similar to the conditions prevailing at variable depths of wells. Smaller cake thickness (2 mm) and loss filtrate were produced with that clay slurry activated by applying the steaming method.
