Abstract

Heavy-ion beams of 40Ar, 48Ti, 58Ni and 84Kr, available now from accelerators such as the UNILAC, combined with experimental facilities, such as the velocity filter SHIP or the GSI on-line mass separator, enabled a considerable extension of alpha decay studies during recent years. The present review describes the status of various experiments underway in this field at GSI Darmstadt. The experimental techniques involved are summarized and the results are discussed in terms of systematics of alpha decay energies and widths. In a final section, an outlook on some present limitations and future potentialities is given.
