Abstract

Nuclear facility decommissioning and waste disposal has been addressed by the Comptroller General in a June 2, 1977, report to the Congress entitled “Cleaning-Up the Remains of Nuclear Facilities--a Multi-billion Dollar Problem”.1 The primary thrust of the report was towards the nuclear power industry; however, other aspects of nuclear work, including isotope usage and particle accelerator facilities, were recognized as sources of potential problems. In order to assess the magnitude of the problem presented by particle accelerator decommissioning, several tasks have been accomplished.
