Abstract

Freud, who gave scientific validation to the woman’s sexual needs, saw the father, through his protective role, as the primary figure of a child’s life. This view was repeated in his writings up to 1921. He identified the role of the penis as an organizer of infantile emotion and personality. Despite Otto Rank and others who stressed the role of the mother, it required the work of a woman—Melanie Klein, who worked with very young children—to establish for psychoanalysis the primary role of the mother, who, through her nutrient breast, acts as the earliest organizer of infantile emotional life and personality.
