Swelling of Aqueous Dispersions of Polymer-Oligomer Particles. Preparation of Polymer Particles of Predetermined Particle Size Including Large Monodisperse Particles

Abstract

Swelling of polymer particles with monomers in aqueous dispersions as described by the Morton Equation1
$$In{\rm{ }}{\phi _{\rm M}} + {\phi _P} + X{\phi _P}^2 + {{^{2\bar V}{M^\gamma }} \over {rRT}} = 0$$
has been discussed with respect to the influence of the interaction parameter, χ, and the value of γ/ro where χ is the interfacial tension, ro is the radius of the particles before swelling, and ϕM and ϕp are the volume fractions of monomer and polymer, respectively.2 With reasonable values of the said parameters it is found that the swelling capacity of polymers expressed as volume monomer absorbed per volume of polymer particles varies in the region 0.5 – 5 in accordance with practical experience.
