Estimation of the Uptake Rate of Solvents Into Latex Particles
By use of the vapour pressure technique the uptake rate of good and poor solvents into polyvinylacetate and polystyrene latices has been investigated at 50°C. The following solvents have been used: vinyl acetate, benzene, toluene, hexane and cyclohexane. In these systems the uptake rate can vary by three orders of magnitude. It appears that the uptake rate is dominantly controlled by the water solubility of the diffusant and the viscosity of the polymer.
